Cnámhdubh: Drakkon Sizes

Dear Gaea,

By the time this reaches you, we have much more to discuss than just the size of dragons. I know that your clans do not think well of the Kuros, but…you now harbor one amongst them. The Queen’s daughter, no less.

We have much to discuss, Matriarch. Too much for me to cover in this letter alone. Just know this: we must find a way to ensure that - Cynder, was it? - that she does not inform her mother. My business here on your islands is unfinished, and Skylands still has far too many wyrms for me to turn myself in. Besides that, I do not think that The Queen’s mind could survive it. Not as she is now.

…I suppose that will have to wait. I promised you I’d finish my lesson, and you asked for specific examples in this lesson.

As a general rule of thumb, Drakkons (male dragons, again old terminology) are much bulkier and muscular than Dragonelles. Usually though, they are shorter in stature; no one’s quite sure why. A scholar in Kurosia once described the difference as, ‘the difference between a bulldog and a cat.’ An apt observation, I have to admit.

You asked, I believe, for the size of a specific trio of dragons whom you either knew from your travels, visited your island, or knew by hearsay. The first was a young drake (a Drakkon who hasn’t reached adulthood) named Cacus. Brissa’s son.

Cacus shows more attributes owned by his mother than his father, in certain ways. His coloring and element are of course all thanks to his sire, but otherwise, he looks very much like a Wind drake. Longer in the trunk and limbs, though his tail has some growing into that needs to be done. That will come as he ages, though. Both his parents had very long tails, and his will be put to good use. Wind and Fire hybrids are often more 'androgynous’ in looks than most others; they have the slimmer forms of their Wind blood with the spurs and growths of their Fire genes. Males and females are usually confused for either gender due to this, and it is entirely unique to their hybridization. (Though, Brissa’s Water mother was much more masculine than feminine. Still, if she stood next to a male Water Drakkon, you could easily tell the difference.)

Next you asked about Morpheus. I met Morpheus when he came down to the Dragon Temple to fetch a newly born Dream Weaver. I believe it was during our last lesson that I mentioned hybrids taking on the stronger attributes of their sire and dam, and amplifying them. Morpheus is one of those rare hybrids where that never happened. He is a strong Drakkon, there is no doubt about that. But his features are wholly unique to him; features I’ve heard were only passed on to his only son, the Purple Dragon, Spyro. Morpheus is a bit taller than most males are, and not one to be trifled with. Morpheus’s wingspan is double what his size would normally dictate; well over seventy-three feet, from wing tip to wing tip.

Lastly is a Drakkon I thought I would never write about by name…Vulcan. I can’t say I’m surprised; Vulcan is a name that I think will always be written about with infamy, as his size and the size of his crimes were enormous.

Sadly I can only tell you about his size as I last saw him over one hundred years ago. Shortly after I fled Kurosia when Malefor turned on Kurogh, I made sure that he would never see the light of day again; he’s trapped somewhere in some sort of cursed realm, and he will never be freed. Not unless a power greater than my own finds and somehow breaks his curse, though I highly doubt that will ever come to pass.

Vulcan was a pure-blooded Fire Drakkon. He is the son of the Fire Guardian, Infernacus and his mate, Nydia. For unknown reasons, Vulcan had gigantism. He never stopped growing, and often his bones pain him fiercely; they are too large and growing at a faster rate than his body has ever been able to keep up with. A fitting, pain filled life for such a treacherous being, I think.

At pubescence, Vulcan was the same height and weight as his father, and his wings hadn’t even capped yet. (Wing capping is something that occurred to you when you reached puberty; the wings develop under a protective hide on the surface of one’s back, as a way to make the drake or drakka more equipped to escape predators. The wings capping essentially means when the wings grow too big for the cases, which contain an embryonic fluid. This wasn’t written in any scientific study in Warfang, so I thought it important for you to know, in case any other children born in your clan ever have this.)

When a young adult, Vulcan was almost double his father’s size, though clumsy as an oaf. He never really bothered to learn how to put his strength to good use, and with his hyperactive metabolism, rarely exercised. It wasn’t until Malefor got a hold of him that he learned how to fight and put on some muscle. Though he was still rather overweight when I last saw him, the fat, blithering oaf….

Vulcan had wings at one point. His wingspan was, as you have no doubt guessed and heard, huge; when he had both wings, the span was almost a hundred feet from one tip to the other. I’m not even sure how long the one wing is now; I’m sure it’s almost over two hundred feet from shoulder to wing tip now. Thank the gods his father burned it off when we sacked Warfang with Feuriah.

Thus concludes our lesson.

Gaea…I know you want to protect Cynder. In a way I think you’re trying to make amends for what happened with Feuriah. Trying to do what you weren’t able to when you were children: give her the sanctuary she deserves, to live and be happy, among friends. But Cynder is a Skylands Hero. She is needed elsewhere, and she should not be running from her problems.

Some talk coming from me, I know…but I cannot pass on. By the Veil I’m not even sure if I can, despite my wishes that Her Majesty could kill me when I turn myself over to her. But as one who betrayed his people, as Cynder did, and as one who fled from the source of his guilt, like she did, I know the guilt she must feel. Even if she’s safe physically, emotionally and mentally, she cannot handle this. She is still too young, and despite her mother’s banishing her, Cynder needs her mother.

Much as it pains me to write this…you aren’t her mother, Gaea. You aren’t a Kuros.

We’ll speak about this when we meet.

Signed,
Asiirha

This post is a bit spoiler-y if you don't follow my Skylanders blog. Or haven't brushed up on some of the posts I have on dA at the moment. Actually this is p spoiler-y in general, as I haven't actually posted the thing I spoil in the story above. Oops.

So for those confused by some of the things talked about in here:
In the last size-chart, we saw a dragoness by the name of Brissa. Brissa is both Cacus (Flame) and Spyro's mother. Shown here are both her sons, and their fathers. It should be p obvious who's dad is who's.
Asiirha fled Kurosia after certain things happened in this universe. He was basically a mental slave to his mate, mentioned in the previous size chart, and Malefor.

*Drakkon: fully-grown male dragon
*Dragonelle: fully-grown female dragon
*drake: child to teenaged male dragon
*drakka: child to teenaged female dragon

Kurosian elements are (c) to WeirdHyenas
Spyro is (c) to not me
Art and other characters/elements are (c) to me
